A Study on the Perception of Case Managers and Person with Mental Disabilities of Working Relationship - Focusing on Community Mental Health Field

|
This study, by exploring the perception of case managers and person with mental disabilities of their working relationship, explores what understanding and efforts are needed in order to develop best working relationships in the community mental health field. Data were collected using FGI which was analyzed through the subject analysis method. Participants were comprised of 3 groups of mental health professionals that have had case managing experience in mental health centers and social rehabilitation facilities, 2 groups of mentally disabled persons who were using case managing service during time this study was conducted. After analyzing the content of the participants’ testimonies, the common categories that were extracted were ‘perception of a good working relationship,’ ‘case manager/mentally disabled person influencing the formation of a working relationship,’ ‘facility environment that influences the working relationship,’ and different categories were discovered depending on the type of participant: ‘understanding of the relationship by the case manager’ for mentally disabled persons, ‘ideal working relationship’ for case managers. Through the results of the subject analysis, the importance of real relationship between the client and the case manager, understanding and application of the characteristic of the Korean relationship represented by ‘family-like,’ and working environment and policy support for the good working relationship were found, and practical suggestions and policy implications are provided.
